English summary: The authors in this volume deal with the belief in fate and in particular with the question of how the concept of the individual freedom and responsibility of human beings is compatible with the idea of the predestination and the controlling of the world by a divine power. The volume presents voices from classical and oriental antiquity, where this subject originated. The ideas from Mesopotamia, Egypt and Greco-Roman antiquity are taken into account along with those of the monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In addition to specific articles on the various cultural environments there are articles which examine the subject from the perspective of religious studies and the philosophy of religion.


German description: Der vorliegende Band enthalt die Beitrage der offentlichen Ringvorlesung von Akademie und Universitat Gottingen zum Jahr der Geisteswissenschaften. Im Zentrum steht der Glaube an die Macht des Schicksals.
