This chapter reviews the key stages in the development of the chicken embryo: from the fertilized oocyte, the zygote, through to the hatched chicken. The chapter also covers extra-embryonic tissues like sub-embryonic fluid, yolk sac, amnion and chorion-allantois membrane (CAM) which develop in synchrony with the embryo and play essential roles in embryo development. In this chapter the main focus is the basic morphological and physiological aspects of development of the chicken embryo.
