The Hellenistic capital of Pergamon and the neighbouring port town of Elaia provide typical examples for examining the economic relationship between a metropolis and its satellite town. New findings from field archaeology have shown how, through its integration into the territorial system of the Hellenistic royal seat of Pergamon, Elaia assumed key economic, military and communications functions for the Attalid capital. This monograph addresses the question of whether these processes of transformation also influenced the coinage of the port city. The type and die catalogue of coins from Elaia allows for an investigation into the potential influence of the Attalids and the metropolis of Pergamon, considering aspects of coin iconography, the organization of minting, and resource utilization, extending into the Roman imperial period.
