Microelectronics is a difficult course, and many students have developed a shallow and short-cut way of solving problems by looking for an equation and then plugging in the numbers. Microelectronics cannot be learned in this way, so this book will help students to develop an intuition for electronic circuits by focusing on the ideas (Tao) behind them.

The book will illustrate the major ideas and basic analysis techniques so that students can derive the right equations easily when facing an electronic circuit. These ideas are not summarized and emphasized in most microelectronics textbooks. The book concentrates on analog microelectronics, and it will begin with a review of circuit analysis, which is the prerequisite for learning electronic circuits. The second chapter will introduce semiconductor devices, including diodes, bipolar junction transistors (BJT), and MOSFETs. It will also cover device models. Chapters 3–5 will cover various amplifiers, which is the central topic in microelectronics. The last chapter will discuss various oscillator circuits, which are widely used in communications systems.

The first edition was published in 2014, and this second edition will include two new chapters on circuit analysis and oscillators, and expanded coverage throughout. In addition, in order to reduce cognitive load, simulation results with Multisim will be used throughout the text. With the simulation results in front of their eyes, students will be able to understand the circuit behaviours much more easily throughout the text.
