This chapter follows the role of digital technologies in achieving sustainable agriculture. The authors first track the evolution of agriculture from its inception to the digital age, then discuss efficiency indicators in agriculture and the need to overcome inefficiency in agricultural production. Discussion then moves to the contrast between Precision Agriculture and Digital Agriculture, and the ways in which they can tackle inefficiency. The authors then analyze material and energy flows in agriculture and consider how Digital Agriculture could advance the sustainability agenda.
