Every one of us, no matter where we live or what we do, has a relationship with the land. The land is in the food we eat. It is where we find meaning, comfort and space for recreation. And it is where countless other species go about their lives.

In The land we are, Rogelio Luque-Lora sets out to find a new understanding of this most fundamental of relationships. Beginning at his family farm outside Seville, he travels to Australia, the United States, Chile and the Scottish Highlands, seeking answers to three key questions. How has using animals and plants to meet our needs made us who we are? How should we treat species and landscapes beyond their practical use? And what is lost when a landscape disappears, or when humans disappear from it?

Through his encounters with a rich array of people, animals and places, Luque-Lora comes to see that the land is much more than a resource for human survival. It is the broader whole of which we are all a part.
