The Demonic and the Dead is the first book-length study of the importance of diabolical ideas to continuing belief in ghosts in early modern England. As such, it sets out to do three main things. First, to highlight the importance of ideas about the demonic in changing perceptions of the ghost over time; second, to capture the complexity of changing beliefs about ghosts across the early modern period and, third, to explore how affective and spatial dynamics changed how ghosts were encountered, understood, embodied and constructed. In doing so, it incorporates ghosts and apparitions into broader histories of the Devil and demonism, and produces a nuanced history of the complex and multi-faceted nature of English apparitions.
