The Temple of Sethos I at Abydos in Upper Egypt is one of the best-preserved monuments from the New Kingdom, the height of Egyptian power and civilisation. Abydos was the home of the great god Osiris., and this temple had the dual purpose of providing for the cult of the dead Pharaoh and of establishing the worship of Osiris as God of the Dead, in a shrine worthy of his reputation. Reliefs and spells carved on the walls represent the rituals once performed here, which enable us to understand the purpose of the various parts of the temple, and also in many cases to reconstruct the order of the ceremonies. This work was first published under slightly different titles in 1973 and 1981, and has long been out of print. This revised and extended edition incorporates important new material: a complete set of translations of the ritual inscriptions with their transliterations; simplified line drawings of the temple scenes; a selection of photographs from the archives of the Egypt Exploration Society; and other magnificent illustrations. This new edition includes some of the outstanding watercolours by Amice Calverley and Myrtle Broome that were published between 1933 and 1958.
