Welfare is increasingly important in broiler production, but can be difficult to measure frequently on large numbers of broilers. In this chapter, different sensor technologies for monitoring broiler welfare indicators are presented. A main distinction is made between body-worn and remote sensors, and the benefits and downsides of both types of technology are discussed. Furthermore, potential applications of sensor technologies for recording welfare in research, breeding and practice are highlighted. Two case studies illustrate in more detail how sensor technologies can be implemented and what challenges may be faced along the way. The chapter ends with a summary and a view towards the future of the use of sensor technologies for recording broiler welfare.
