The relation between tragedy and opera is as old as opera itself.
Opera was born out of experiments by Italian scholars of the Renaissance relating to the nature of ancient tragedy and ways in which it could be performed. And many works in the operatic repertoire derive their subject matter from ancient legends. This relationship is described briefly, though with full documentation, in this little volume.
