There is still discussion whether the Book of Ruth is part of the postexilic debate about mixed marriages. Countering the objection that there is a lack of conflict in the Book of Ruth, Deborah Storek sees a subtle discussion through intertextual allusions and the narrative use of legal institutions. The narrative adaptations of the legal institution of redemption and the Levirate law in Deut. 25 shed light on the marriage with a foreign woman: The familial solidarity emphatically encompasses the stranger (Ru. 2) and keeps a family from obliteration, thus salvaging the Davidic dynasty (Ru. 4). Allusions to other texts subtly counter arguments against mixed marriages (Gen. 24; Deut. religious fears). Specific reactions to Ezr-Neh are not confirmed. Considering the apparent ignorance of Lev. 25, the book might be dated before those texts, in the earlier phases of postexilic discussions regarding the identity and future of Israel.
