In eighteen studies by renowned scholars, this volume addresses Quintilian's Institutio oratoria from various disciplinary perspectives. Based on Quintilian's claim that the orator must possess comprehensive erudition, it examines the relationship between rhetoric and other fields of knowledge. The contributions cover the rhetorical theory from disposition and argumentation to stylistics and delivery of speech, and are divided into six sections: architecture; law and philosophy; fine arts and literary criticism; mathematics, music and cookery; seafaring and agriculture; sport, medicine and drama.
