At first glance, women play only a secondary role in the Acts of the Apostles, but Danielle Stocker shows that a literary and narratological analysis of the text reveals a more nuanced story beneath the surface. At Pentecost, the oracular word of Acts 2:17-18, whose specific form is "your sons and daughters ... my servants and my handmaidens", serves as a programmatic matrix for the generalization and universalization of the Spirit, and it, reappears eight times in the generic form "men and women". In this study, the author demonstrates that in the pericopes where women appear, these pairings outline the different stages of the Petrine and Pauline missions and testify to the gradual recognition of women's personhood and speech, in a constant interplay between the explicit and the implicit, which bears witness to the advances and reservations of a first-century author.
