Julian of Norwich – one of the Middle English Mystics – is appreciated by many who perceive that her writings contain helpful teaching on spirituality. However, this fourteenth-century woman was not only a contemplative, but also an anchoress, bound to the institutional Church of the medieval era and its teaching. "Julian of Norwich and the Kingdom of God" extends what is already known of Julian’s biblical knowledge, including biblical interpretation, and explores her texts through a biblically inspired theme – the kingdom of God. By tracing this theme, the author assesses Julian’s developing understanding while she pondered her visions. The author also explores the extent to which Julian perceived the kingdom of God in personal terms and in relation to membership of the institutional Church.
