Food production builds on the cooperation of enterprises within agri-food supply chains reaching from agriculture to retail. The interdependencies between enterprises require coordination of decisions and activities for assuring efficiency in production along the chain and serving the expectations of consumers and society regarding quality and sustainability. Coordination requires information and the availability of appropriate IT-based information and communication systems. The complexity of food chains in markets with changing trade relationships is mirrored in the complexity of suitable organizations of IT-based information and communication systems. This chapter outlines challenges in communicating information across food chains, discusses alternative solutions and identifies issues that require further research and development.
