Depicts a group of characters in a mysterious land, but is more concerned with philosophical dialogue than exotic adventure. The characters debate the customs and thoughts of the Avaïtes, the people of the imaginary land of Calejava. An eighteenth-century work considered historically significant as it depicts ‘for the first time, a religious system which is unequivocally deistic.’ (Early Deism in France, C.J.Betts).
