The broiler industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors that has developed dramatically to meet the growing global demand for animal protein. Concerns over climate change and global warming have increased average daily temperatures resulting in the incidence of heat waves, especially during the summer months in the tropical and subtropical regions. An increase in environmental temperatures greater than optimal conditions needed by the birds results in heat stress. Broiler chickens are particularly susceptible to heat stress given their limited ability for heat dissipation, rapid body growth, and feather insulation over the body. Exposure to heat stress negatively affects a plethora of body functions, impeding the health, productivity, and welfare of birds, and thus accruing huge economic losses to poultry enterprises. This necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the predisposing factors, examination of the impacts, and the devisement of efficient ways to manage heat stress in broiler production sustainably and resiliently.
