Up to now European unification has primarily been considered a matter of political and economic concern. Very little attention has been paid to education and training, although many resolutions of various treaties, especially regarding the labor market, would remain ineffectual without any synchronization of the various systems of education and training. Moreover, if popular support for political and economic integration is to be secured, the citizens of Europe, in Delors' words, must "genuinely have the feeling that they are involved in this joint adventure (Europe)," whichwill be achieved only through a better understanding of each other's history and also an awareness of common European history and common cultural traditions. This volume presents a selection of papers given at a recent meeting, attended by representatives from about thirty European countries who had come together to take stock after Maastricht and to develop new perspectives for a future European educational system.
