As one of the fastest growing sectors of livestock farming, poultry industry plays a crucial role in global food security and poverty alleviation. One of the major challenges in sustainable growth of the sector comes from a plethora of diseases, including those caused by diverse set of viruses. While vaccination using conventional vaccines have been largely effective in protecting avian health, continuing emergence and diversity of pathogens, some of them with profound immunosuppressive effects are threatening the efficacy of some of the current vaccines. Hence there is an urgent need to bring innovation in vaccine development and technologies associated with it. In this chapter, the recent advances in the development of recombinant viral vectored vaccines, including the application of new gene editing technologies for development of multivalent vaccines that can induce simultaneous protection against multiple avian diseases, are discussed. vaccination and improved biosecurity measures can help in sustainable poultry production.
