Volume 8 of Cotton Mather's Biblia Americana (1693-1728) contains an extensive commentary on the Gospel of John and the Acts of the Apostles. There is an emphasis in the study of John on Christology and the use of types and allegory. Mather includes a history of toleration and persecution of Jewish settlements on three continents up until the eighteenth century. The Introduction relates Mather's method to the tradition of social epistemology and the advanced historiographical developments of Pierre Bayle and Sephardic Jews.
