This chapter draws attention to assessing the environmental impact of commercial cultivated meat production. To provide some context, the chapter first focuses on the environmental impacts of livestock production, specifically the impact of land use and biodiversity, climate change as well as the effect of water use and emissions to waterways. The chapter moves on to examine the use of life cycle assessment and how this practice can be used to estimate the environmental impact of cultured meat products. This is then followed by an overview of the potential environmental impacts of cultivated meat. Similarly to the section on livestock production it discusses the impact of land use and biodiversity, climate change, water use and emissions to waterways whilst also assessing how energy is used during cultivated meat production processes.
