Artificial Violence
In Artificial Violence James Tyner offers a critical reflection on violence in contemporary society. Conceptually, he reconfigures the theoretical understanding and empirical documentation of violence at the interstices of two vibrant fields of study: the Anthropocene and artificial intelligence. He navigates an intellectual journey that straddles the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities through an exploration of artificial violence as both real and imagined. As Tyner demonstrates, there is an intimate but often acrimonious relationship between the imaginary violence of artificial intelligence – especially in its robotic form – and the reality of existing systems of artificial intelligence. This "gap" between the real and imagined poses significant challenges in any attempt to provide a balanced, non-hyperbolic discussion of the promises and perils of artificial intelligence. To fully comprehend the Anthropocene, and humanity’s current and future disruptions of the Earth system, Tyner argues we must understand more concretely artificial violence as it exists in both real and imagined ways.
