This chapter reviews advances in tissue culture techniques for ornamental plant propagation. It begins by looking at research on the factors determing the effectiveness of tissue culture techniques. It then looks at key developments in the range of in vitro tissue culture techniques. These include: clonal propagation and organogenesis, embryo rescue, thin cell layer (TCL) technology, somatic embryogenesis, the use of tissue culture in mutagenesis and mutation breeding, slow-growth conservation techniques, bioreactor/liquid culture, plant improvement through genetic engineering and the use of molecular markers in tissue culture.
