This is a companion textbook for an introductory course in physics. The purpose is to thoroughly link the theories students learn in class with actual problem-solving techniques. Whitney & Whitney present not a textbook, per se, but rather a generic companion to one. Their contribution to introductory undergraduate Physics lies in a text that helps students to understand, and to derive maximal benefit from, the mathematics underlying standard course texts. As such, it is very valuable to those studying elementary Physics courses or beginning their tertiary education in Physics, but is intelligible and accessible even to inquisitive and eager students in secondary school, keen to ‘dip their toes’ into more advanced material. The array of rules of thumb, insights and interpretations that inform physicists’ approach to their discipline are well represented. Indeed, the couple use the differences in their own approaches to problems to illustrate different views and ways of thinking.

This handbook is intended mainly for students learning introductory physics or electromagnetics. It is essentially a guidebook for helping students understand and reinforce the basic concepts in physics and engineering. The authors provide examples and explanations for many fundamentals concepts. What makes this book so valuable is that the authors have clearly and carefully written many useful tips and explanations for understanding basic concepts in physics that give students an advantage in not only lest taking but in real understanding. In addition to explaining concepts, many of the tips are for ensuring the calculations are performed correctly.
