Bereits gegen Ende des zweiten Jahrhunderts begannen einige frühe Christen, die Eunuchen in Matthäus 19,12 als bloße Chiffre für die Ehelosigkeit zu lesen. Zahlreiche neuere Auslegungen haben diese Sicht in Frage gestellt und darauf hingewiesen, dass Eunuchen als problematisches Vorbild für Ehelosigkeit gegolten hätten, da das zur Zeit des Matthäusevangeliums wirksame Eunuchenmotiv einen hypersexualisierten konnotiert war und häufig als rhetorische Kontrastfigur zur Ehelosigkeit diente, nicht als Modell. Gleichwohl beruht die moderne bibelwissenschaftliche Exegese dieser Stelle auf einer naheliegenden, jedoch auffälligerweise nicht hinterfragten Voraussetzung: dass die Eunuchen weiterhin als Vorbild für die Nachfolge zu verstehen seien. Gemäß dieser Prämisse besteht die exegetische Aufgabe darin, den ansonsten rätselhaften Aspekt der Jüngerschaft zu ermitteln, den die Eunuchen angeblich verkörpern. Ian Kinman macht geltend, dass eine solche Lesart anachronistisch und verfehlt ist: Die Eunuchen wurden vom Verfasser des Matthäusevangeliums nicht als Vorbild, sondern als Antitypus verstanden. Gestützt auf zahlreiche Beispiele aus der Literatur des antiken Mittelmeerraums des ersten und zweiten Jahrhunderts sowie durch eine detaillierte vergleichende Exegese des Matthäusevangeliums zeigt der Autor, dass Matthäus 19,12 die Eunuchen als Beispiel für diejenigen darstellt, die im Blick auf das Wort vom Reich nicht fruchtbar sind, und zwar konkret im Kontext der kontroversen Lehren Jesu zu Scheidung und Ehe. Stattdessen sind sie, mit den Worten von Jesaja 56,3, „verdorrt". Damit sind die Eunuchen nicht als Vorbilder für das Leben in der matthäischen Gemeinde zu verstehen, sondern als Warnung vor einer nur unvollständigen Annahme und Verwirklichung des anspruchsvollen Wortes vom Himmelreich.
