Das polnische Schuldgesetzbuch von 1933 war - mit Ausnahme des lettischen Zivilgesetzbuchs von 1937 - die einzige umfassende privatrechtliche Kodifikation, die in Ostmitteleuropa in der Zwischenkriegszeit erlassen wurde. Der vorliegende Band vergleicht diese polnische Leistung mit den österreichischen, deutschen, französischen und russischen Kodifikationen, die damals in Polen weiterhin galten, sowie mit dem Schweizerischen Obligationenrecht von 1911 und dem französisch-italienischen Entwurf von 1927. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, ob die polnischen Kodifikatoren unter der Leitung von Roman Longchamps de Berier lediglich westliche Lösungen übernahmen oder auch eigene originelle Beiträge entwickelten.
Als kurzlebige Gesetzgebung - im Juli 1934 in Kraft getreten und mit dem Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs fünf Jahre später faktisch gegenstandslos geworden - blieb das polnische Schuldgesetzbuch der rechtsvergleichenden Forschung weitgehend unbekannt. In der Nachkriegszeit wurde das polnische Zivilrecht durch den sowjetischen Kommunismus grundlegend umgestaltet. Trotz seiner praktischen Überholung blieb das Schuldgesetzbuch formal bis zum Inkrafttreten des polnischen Zivilgesetzbuchs von 1964, der Kodifikation des „real existierenden" Staatssozialismus, in Kraft.
Der Band gliedert sich in drei Teile: Inspirationen, Institutionen und Rezeptionen. Der erste Teil untersucht den Einfluss ausländischer Rechtsordnungen auf den Kodifikationsprozess. Der zweite analysiert die besonderen rechtlichen Institutionen, die durch das Schuldgesetzbuch von 1933 eingeführt wurden. Der dritte verfolgt den Einfluss des polnischen Gesetzbuchs in Ostmitteleuropa während der Zwischenkriegszeit. Den Abschluss bildet ein General Outlook, der die weitergehende Bedeutung des Schuldgesetzbuchs für die Geschichte des polnischen Privatrechts beleuchtet.
