The first chapter examines the composition of the Quranic text with the result that its arrangement - in addition to didactic and literary intentions - follows a theological programme: The unity and diversity of the reality of creation is reflected in the text and, to a certain extent, also revealed. The method of investigation, namely the chronological reading and exegesis of the text, represents one of the innovative aspects of this work.
The second chapter is dedicated to analysing the structure of the first revelation in order to understand the foundations of the foundation of the new religion and the new cult: The God of prophetic monotheism is the Lord of history. Real and salvation history are not identical, but are also not torn apart, but complement each other. Only in this way is it possible to formulate a theory of history , which in turn holds out the prospect of expanding the narrow boundaries of the tribal order of life in favour of a general social order.
In the third chapter, the relationship between revelation and politics is defined using the pair of metaphors "light" and "darkness". This leads to the realisation that the contrast usually assumed between the Meccan and Medinan suras is not tenable. The eschatological dimension of the early suras is not abandoned in the Medinan suras, but rather transformed into the social order understood as effective in the history of salvation and thus continued.
