In re-examining the paintings of Karl Weschke (1925-2005), this first in-depth scholarly account of the artist's remarkable life unlocks much that has been over-looked, hidden, misunderstood or misrepresented about the art produced in and around St Ives. Matt Retallick discusses the multiple influences that reveal themselves in Weschke's rich body of work.

Weschke arrived in Britain in 1945 as a German prisoner of war and, following an experimental re-education programme, went on to become an artist. His mainly figurative and allegorical paintings explored themes of alienation, violation and turmoil as cathartic excavations of self – work that ran contrary to the Constructivist-led impulses of those better-known ‘Cornish’ artists. Weschke was also a tutor at Saint Peter’s Loft, the art school founded by Peter Lanyon in St Ives in 1954, and this book offers the first thorough study of the school and the artists associated with it, significantly reshaping our understanding of ‘St Ives modernism’. Crucial new information about Francis Bacon’s little understood period in the town is also revealed, showing how Weschke became a pivotal figure for Bacon at a time when he faced isolation and rejection from the art world.

Multi-layered and nuanced, this pioneering book is much more than a study of one artist in its invitation to readers to reconsider one of Britain’s most discussed artistic communities.
