The Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae is the standard authority for identifying the higher clergy of the Church of England from 1066–1857. This volume, edited by William H. Campbell and Joyce M. Horn, covers the Welsh dioceses from 1541–1857. It lists the bishops, deans, archdeacons and other clerics with their biographical details in the dioceses of Bangor, St Asaph, Llandaff and St Davids. This modern edition of John Le Neve’s original Fasti also draws on T. Duffus Hardy’s 1854 update, Browne Willis’s published Surveys of the Welsh cathedrals (1717–21) and, for the first time, Willis’s unpublished manuscripts held at the Bodleian Library. Complete with a general introduction, explanatory commentary and introductions to the four dioceses, this is an essential research tool for scholars of ecclesiastical history.
This volume brings together a wide range of source material of great importance for the history of Wales and of the Church of England, but that is often hard to find and sometimes difficult to interpret. It is an essential resource for students of early modern Wales and an outstanding addition to the Fasti series.
