In modern agriculture site specific irrigation (SSI) involves delivering water to a specific land location to match water application with crop water demand, in order to achieve required crop responses (e.g. in terms of yield and quality) in a cost-effective way. SSI includes the evaluation of crop status, processing the data into actionable information, and applying water accordingly. This chapter will deal with site-specific water delivery methods as they have evolved in the last few decades. It will focus on pressurized irrigation techniques (Phocaides 2000) (which allow precise targeting of water at particular plants or areas of soil) rather than surface irrigation, which relies on gravity to distribute water within a field usually in a relatively uniform pattern.
