English summary: The contributions in this volume mostly go back to a symposium held in Zurich in the fall of 2013. Using the example of Paul's Epistle to the Philippians, they reflect on the interdependence of Paul's thought and speech and the diverse intellectual traditions and social conventions that were part of his Hellenistic-Roman context. The individual essays reflect the broad diversity of such references and take aspects including philosophy and ethics, social and legal history as well as rhetorics and communication strategy into account.

German description: Die Beitrage dieses Bandes gehen mehrheitlich auf eine Fachtagung zuruck, die im Herbst 2013 in Zurich stattfand. Sie thematisieren am Beispiel des Philipperbriefes die Verflechtung der Denk- und Sprachwelt des Paulus mit den vielfaltigen intellektuellen Traditionen und sozialen Konventionen seines hellenistisch-romischen Kontextes.
