Genome editing technologies are quickly emerging as a powerful tool in crop breeding programmes worldwide. These technologies allow plant breeders to make targeted modifications to a plant’s DNA to either improve various desirable crop traits, such as drought tolerance, or delete undesirable traits, such as those which make the crop more susceptible to biotic and abiotic stresses.

Advances in gene editing of crops provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in key genome editing technologies, such as CRISPR/Cas systems, and highlights their role in producing more resilient, nutritious and higher-yielding crops. The book considers the application of specific techniques in breeding programmes for cereal crops, fruits and vegetables, as well as protein and industrial crops.

This book builds on a successful earlier volume published by Burleigh Dodds Science Publishing: Genome editing for precision crop breeding (2021).

Dr Götz Hensel is a molecular biologist by training. He is the Head of the Centre for Plant Genome Engineering (CPGE) at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany. His research focuses on developing and applying methods for genetic transformation and gene editing of crop plants, including cereals, sunflowers, and rice, for fundamental research and crop improvement. His interests include crop domestication, chloroplast development and photosynthesis, as well as plant-microbe interactions and molecular farming.
